In 1936, Franz Goebel began fashioning figurines inspired by the drawings of Sister Maria Innocential (Berta Hummel - 1909-1946), a Sister in the Siessen Convent in Saulgau, Germany. Marks (crown, full bee, stylized bee, etc.) are of great interest to collectors as they help establish the production era. American occupying forces in Germany after WW II were exposed to these delightful Hummel figurines, plaques, candy boxes, candesticks, collector plates in various series (such as Hummel Little Companions collector plates), lamps and other items, many acquiring them before returning home and contributing to an increase in the their popularity. Some well known Hummel figurines of the hundreds manufactured are Apple Tree Girl, Apple Tree Boy, Umbrella Girl, Umbrella Boy, Skier, Mountaineer, Chimney Sweep, Puppy Love, Little Fiddler, Strolling Along, Merry Wanderer, Playmates, Eventide, Happy Pastime, School boys, School Girls, Star Gazer, Little Sweeper, Band Leader, Little Tooter and Happy Pastime.
